Hey, there, I'm a freshman who's considering applying and transferring. I've got a ton of questions about this place, which looks great...but I'm also a student of color. I guess I'm wondering what anyone's experience has been as a minority - positive, so-so, or what? Thanks in advance — Asked by Anonymous

I think that this is really important to address.  I’m biracial (black and white), and I had similar worries about the lack of diversity on campus, because let’s face it—eighty percent of Bennington students are white.  I come from a very diverse city, high school, and family, so I was kind put off by that number when I was initially checking out the school.  But I can say with complete honesty that I have had an amazing experience here, regardless of this data.  There are students here who encourage discussion about race, and I think it’s something that does need to be talked about.  That said, just because Bennington may be fairly racially homogeneous, it is definitely not culturally or socioeconomically homogeneous.  But ultimately, I don’t think that my experience here has had much to do with my race at all.
