In last week of my first Spring term, there was a sudden thunderstorm the night of Midnight Breakfast — a tradition during the last week of every term where the dining hall opens at midnight and our teachers serve us donuts and french fries and there’s a live band. I was walking back up from the sauna (yes, we have a sauna) after a Sacred Harp singing (traditional American shapenote choir), and I remember watching thunderclouds start to cover the almost full moon. When I got back to my house, the rain was starting and we all poured out onto Commons Lawn to run around and dance to the beat of slowly approaching thunder. After we dried off we went to Midnight Breakfast, ate food, and danced some more!
There’s lots of memories to choose from. This one sums up one of the things I love most about social life at Bennington — how spontaneous it is, how willing people are to adventure, to dance, to take risks and have fun! And the weather here is as exciting as the students.
