If a student wants to live off campus starting sophomore year how hard is that? Are there apartments to rent in North Bennington as there were in the 80's? (i am an alumni of the school and many of us lived off campus in those years). I am not referring to school housing. Considering Bennington for our child. — Asked by Anonymous

It’s possible to live off campus, but not easy. Students have to apply and “Explain why you wish to live off campus and why it would be beneficial to you (—from the application).” The number of students who are allowed to live off-campus shifts from term to term, depending on how many students are abroad/on leave. I think the idea is that they want there to be a minimal critical mass of students on campus at all times so this place doesn’t get to feel like a ghost town.

If you’re given the opportunity to live off-campus, there are plenty of options in North Bennington and Bennington proper and in general local landlords seem welcoming of student tenants.

Will Bennington accept Letters of Recommendation from Religion teachers? — Asked by Anonymous

Here are the official guidelines for teacher recommendations found in the “Apply” section of our website:

We Require teacher recommendations from teachers of at least two different subject areas. Choose from English, mathematics, foreign languages, science, and social studies. You may submit additional recommendations from other teachers, mentors, and employers. (Use the form provided by the Common Application.)

We would definitely accept a recommendation from your Religion teacher in addition to the recommendations from the other subject areas listed above!

How concerned is admissions with SAT scores? — Asked by Anonymous

Bennington is an SAT optional school. Only about 35% of applicants submit their SAT scores. There is no penalty for not submitting SAT scores.

In general, no part of an application is looked at in isolation. If you chose to submit them, they are important for what they contribute to your personal story.
