[Part 10 of the Posters at Bennington Series]

One of the most common questions I’m asked on tours is “What is there to do at Bennington?” I know that before I came here I couldn’t for the life of me imagine what one would do all day at a small liberal arts school in Vermont. But when I visited campus I realized that everywhere I looked, the walls were plastered with posters advertising clubs, performances, discussions, lectures, films, and more.

So I thought, for those of you who can’t visit campus just yet, that I’d start a weekly series where I showcase some of the posters around campus over the past year or two. All photo credits go to the folks behind the Bennington College Flickr!

Lauren Hamilton ‘12 is a Bennington student spending the summer in North Bennington, the little town in walking distance of campus. She studies Visual Arts/Printmaking and thinks a lot about transcending the distances between space and time and memories and people. This was her day:

I woke up at 7 AM to get ready to go to the Vermont Art’s Exchange for the  3-5 year old art camp I teach at. We painted all day and played in the indoor sandbox (we had moved some sand inside since it’s been raining up here). When camp was over for the day, I headed to Camelot Village, a sprawling antique warehouse near the Bennington Battle Monument and wandered for a while.

Then it was time to run silly errands: bread from the Crazy Russian Girls’ Bakery on Main Street in Downtown Bennington, and then ingredients for my favorite cookies ever: Midnight Cowboy Cookies, a recipe my dear friend and miracle-baker Faith ‘11 created (hey, if you want the recipe, hit me up next term. Usually found in Longmeadow or VAPA [The Visual and Performing Arts Building], or talk to dear Faith, she has a zine of her recipes for sale).

Now I’m at the Townhouse, Bennington’s of campus co-op which is just a short walk from my apartment on Water Street, sittin with my friend Janiele and talkin about some kittens. The kittens are these two lil baby cats who me and my friends sharing the house on Water Street are collectively babysitting. Their names are Chris and Cupid. They’re sisters.

Let me tell you: an ideal night is reading in your bed as the rain falls outside, with two kittens all curled up beside you.

In other news: the Crossett Library is open over the summer. It’s perfect. I walked out with a stack of books up to my nose. Mostly giant books about the work of Alice Neel and Paul Klee for the kids to look through tomorrow. I remember when I was little, my mom would go to the library and return with an even higher stack of books. I also stocked up on some children’s books, both for camp and for myself.

It was a pretty okay day.

Best to all of you,

Lauren
