Bennington Vermonster

image

Bennington Vermonster is the school’s first club ultimate team, formed in the Fall of 2012. We take our name from a mythical beast that haunts the path to Jennings–Goat Boy, the Vermonster.

Hey! I come from a very athletic-centered school.... I am not very talented in that area myself, but I'm curious what kind of athletics go on at Bennington? are there any teams? Are there games to attend? — Asked by laurenann21

Hey, no worries, athletics at Bennington is what you make it and most of us are in just to have fun.

We have a soccer team, a fencing team, and an ultimate Frisbee team which compete against other schools and there are games to attend. We also have intramural badminton, volleyball, swimming, basketball, and many other groups that just play for fun. It is also super easy to start a club for whatever sport you want on campus.

We also have many groups that do outdoor athletics such as the Skiing and Snowboarding club and the Climbing club as well as many outdoor trips throughout the year.

I know that this is probably the most irrelevant question to ask, but does Bennington have a mascot? Or a symbol of some kind? Like, for example, what do they put on their t-shirts? Is it just the school's name? Thanks! — Asked by Anonymous

Not as of yet. There has been some preliminary discussion about, you know, if we were to have a mascot, what it would be, how it would represent us best, etc. It’s definitely a topic of discussion, though, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, though, check out the Facebook page for our rapidly growing athletics program at http://www.facebook.com/BenningtonAthleticDepartment. There’s a lot of really neat stuff coming down the pipeline, and if there are any announcements to be made regarding mascots/colors, this will be where to find it.

I have been a competitive swimmer for many years, Bennington would be a great fit but I'm not ready to stop swimming at that level. It makes my world a better place. Any suggestions on how to do both? — Asked by Anonymous

Bennington doesn’t have a swim team, but there is a group of people that goes swimming regularly at a pool in town. I don’t know of any specific teams, but I’m sure if you found a competitive swim team somewhere nearby, you could juggle that and attending Bennington.

Good luck!

[Part 11 of the Posters at Bennington Series]

One of the most common questions I’m asked on tours is “What is there to do at Bennington?” I know that before I came here I couldn’t for the life of me imagine what one would do all day at a small liberal arts school in Vermont. But when I visited campus I realized that everywhere I looked, the walls were plastered with posters advertising clubs, performances, discussions, lectures, films, and more.

So I thought, for those of you who can’t visit campus just yet, that I’d start a weekly series where I showcase some of the posters around campus over the past year or two. All photo credits go to the folks behind the Bennington College Flickr!

I see on the calendar that last year there was "fencing practice" whats that? Do you have a fencing club? Is it intense? — Asked by Anonymous

Yes we do! It’s as intense as you make it. Anyone can join and it’s pretty active as far as traveling to various competitions and tournaments on some weekends. I’ll let this video do the talking. Enjoy!

On Athletics: there is also a great group that goes swimming at the pool in Bennington most days. — Asked by Anonymous

An addendum to Liam’s athletics answer from yesterday. He is very, very sorry to have forgotten this. He will not be forgiven. Thanks for the tip, anon!

Athletics at Bennington. Tell me more, s'il vous plaît! — Asked by Anonymous

Here’s the official scoop from the website.

We have intercollegiate soccer and fencing teams.

We have pick up games in various sports including dodgeball (I would just like to mention that my team came in second place in the league this spring), volleyball, basketball and tennis.

We have the Meyer Rec Barn, which has a full assortment of weight and elliptical machines as well as aerobics rooms where we offer yoga, Pilates and Zumba classes. It also has a pretty fly climbing wall and a sweet sweet sauna.

We have Outdoor tennis and basketball courts and a soccer field.

And we have some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast just down the street so to speak.

I'm nearly positive this question has been asked before but I can't find it anywhere. Are there school colors or a mascot? — Asked by Anonymous

Evan thinks the unofficial school color is “rust” because that’s what the letterhead is and the signs around campus, and each class gets a color. I think my class color is maroon.

As far as mascots, our soccer team is the Bennington Pioneers, and our fencing team is the Bennington Brute Squad. There was some discussion this year about making a universal mascot, and in typical Bennington individualist fashion, both teams loved their own mascot too much to change.

I have never been on a sports team before in my life, but I'm really interested in soccer at Bennington. Would I be able to join the team, or are there tryouts/restrictions? — Asked by Anonymous

Anyone can join the Bennington Pioneers soccer team (“All skill levels welcome!”) which is co-ed and awesome.
